Got my ticket there 25 yrs ago. Chad Mayberry was my instructor. John was the best ever! Had a blast playing ping pong with John, Chad and Chad Gardiner, a great place to get away. Quick story, John had to go get a guy in North Dakota, it was late afternoon and he asked if I wanted to go, I said sure. Never been in a twin let alone a a 310R model. John takes off, points the plane northeast and says keep going in that direction and he goes to sleep! No GPS, no moving maps, just loran and VOR to guide me. We made it, picked up the guy and the same instructions on the way back, but now it’s pitch black out. Halfway through the engines starts to sputter. I lose my crap wake up John knowing we are dead, he reaches down, switches the fuel over to the other wing and goes right back to sleep. Nerves of steel that guy had. I knew him since the early 80’s and he was always the same. John was cut from his own cloth! Great times. I miss them…
